Obesity Surgery Reduce Costs of Diabetes Patients

Three-quarters of diabetics who underwent obesity surgery weight loss diabetes can stop taking the drug within six months after surgery.


Oara United States researchers say obesity surgery can eliminate the need for chronic disease drugs and reduce overall health costs. These results provide a strong argument that the insurance company will pay for the surgical procedure.


“Once developed, diabetes and obesity rarely reversed” said Dr. Martin Makary of the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and colleagues in a report in the medical journal Archives of Surgery.

Bariatric surgery or weight loss surgery increased 200% over the last five years. Fat people struggling to lose weight to avoid health complications, such as diabetes, heart disease, joint pain, and some cancers.


Makary and his colleagues analyzed insurance claims data from 2235 patients who underwent bariatric surgery during a period of four years.


They found that among patients with diabetes who undergo bariatric surgery, only 25% were on diabetes medications six months later.


One year after surgery, less than 20% of patients taking diabetes drugs and two years after surgery, only 15% still do it.


Medical costs per patient with diabetes an average of U.S. $ 6.376 per year within two years prior to surgery. Average operating costs and hospitalization was U.S. $ 29,959.


Increased health care costs in the year after a study by nearly 10% of patients, but then fell 34% in the second year after surgery, and 70.5% in the third year.
